Rhyolite, in the Bullfrog mining district of southern Nye County, Nevada, was a raw boomtown in 1905, barely a year old after gold was found in the surrounding hills in 1904. Companies like the Montgomery Shoshone were building mills to crush and process ore, and the town's economy rose or fell with the assays coming out of the claims. Supplies, lumber, and machinery had to be hauled across desert country by freight wagon, and water was scarce and expensive, which shaped everything from building costs to daily life. Residents of the period knew Rhyolite as a place of fast fortunes and fast turnover, where new stores, banks, and saloons went up alongside tent camps while investors watched the stock market for news from the mines.
