In 1905 Bullfrog was a raw mining camp in the Amargosa country of southern Nevada, where the hunt for gold had drawn men from California, Arizona, and the Midwest. Residents lived in a mix of canvas tents, board shanties, and rooming houses, and the nearby settlement of Beatty was itself a rough outpost. Many claim owners lived in San Francisco and other distant cities, so decisions about hiring, payroll, and development were often made far from the hills. Saloons and gambling halls set much of the camp's nightlife, while a few churches and fraternal lodges offered the steadier company of home.
