Bonnie Clare, in the mining country of southern Nye County, Nevada, was a small camp in 1907, when the state's economy still rested almost entirely on metal mining. The strikes at Tonopah and Goldfield a few years earlier had drawn prospectors, investors and freight teams across the Nevada desert, and smaller districts like this one hoped to share in that boom. A mill such as the one shown was the center of camp life, since ore had to be crushed and processed before it could pay, and the work drew men who lived in plank houses and tents near the stamps. Mining towns of the period were often short-lived, rising and falling with the assay reports, and residents in 1907 would have known the place mainly as a working mill site, not a settled town.
