Beatty, Nevada, in 1907 was a dusty freight and supply stop in the Amargosa Valley, named for Montillus Beatty, who ran a saloon and stage station there. The town served the Bullfrog mining district to the west, where gold discoveries in 1904 had set off a rush that brought thousands of people to nearby Rhyolite within a few years. Teams of freight wagons carried ore, timber, water, and supplies along the desert roads between the camps, and Beatty's hotels, saloons, and stores depended on that traffic. Residents knew the town as the gateway to the desert mines, but the boom would fade within a few years as the richest claims played out.
