Beatty, Nevada, sat in the desert of Nye County in 1907, a supply stop for the mining camps that had boomed across the surrounding hills since the early 1900s. Freight wagons, and later rail lines, carried ore, timber, water, and food between the scattered claims and the towns that served them. Rhyolite, a few miles west, was then at the height of its brief boom, and Beatty drew much of its trade from that rush. Life in the town centered on its saloons, boarding houses, stores, and the hotels that catered to prospectors and teamsters passing through. Residents knew the place as a dry, windswept crossroads where weather could change quickly, and the sky above the Amargosa Valley was often the first thing a traveler noticed.
