Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1910 was a young railroad town on the desert floor, only about five years old, after the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad sold its first town lots in 1905. The railroad's division point and its shops gave the town most of its paychecks, while nearby ranching, freight hauling and the artesian springs that had drawn travelers for generations supported the rest. In 1909 the state legislature created Clark County, named for the Montana copper magnate William A. Clark, and Las Vegas became its seat, which added courthouse and county business to the town's life. That same year lawmakers outlawed gambling, a ban that took effect in 1910 and would not be lifted until 1931. Residents at the time knew the place as a rail stop and a growing county center in a wide, dry valley.
