Bullfrog, Nevada, sat in the desert hills of southern Nye County in 1905, a little more than a year after prospectors staked gold claims there in 1904. The strike set off a rush of miners, promoters, and investors, and tent camps and frame buildings went up quickly around the claims, with nearby Rhyolite growing into the district's main town. Water was scarce and costly, and nearly everything had to be freighted in by wagon across the desert, which made every shipment of lumber, machinery, and supplies expensive. Stock sales ran as fast as the mining, and many people in the camps measured their prospects by the next assay or the latest share price, a pattern shared with other Nevada booms of the era.
