Goldfield, Nevada, in 1906 was a mining camp that had grown from a few claims into a boom town within about four years. Prospectors had opened gold ground on the slopes of Columbia Mountain in Esmeralda County in 1902, and by the mid-1900s money from the mines was pouring into the town and into the stock exchanges of distant cities. Thousands of miners, merchants, gamblers and teamsters crowded into a desert landscape where water and lumber had to be hauled in, and many residents still lived in tents or hastily built frame houses. Consolidation of the richest claims under large companies was reshaping the district that year, and the town's civic life centered on saloons, hotels and the mine offices that set the pace for the whole camp.
