Lake Tahoe in 1906 sat on the Nevada-California line, and its shores had been reshaped by decades of logging. Timber cut from the surrounding slopes had fed the silver mines of the Comstock Lode since the 1860s, and flumes and mills moved lumber down to the mining towns. By the early 1900s the lake was also drawing summer visitors from Reno, Carson City, and the Bay Area, who reached it by stage, rail, and lake steamer to stay at resort hotels and camps. The state line running through the water shaped county and state politics on both shores. Few residents then could have guessed how much of that shoreline would soon be given over to resorts and summer homes.
