Lake Tahoe, straddling the Nevada and California line, was in 1906 known for its timber, its summer visitors, and its deep, clear water. During the 1870s and 1880s the surrounding forests were cut heavily to supply the Comstock mines at Virginia City, and lumber traveled to the mining district by a long wooden flume, so the cleared slopes were still visible to visitors. By the early 1900s steamers carried passengers across the lake, and hotels and summer cottages drew families from Reno and the San Francisco Bay Area for fishing, boating, and mountain air. People living in the small lakeside communities would have known the region as a working lumber country that was slowly turning into a resort destination.
