Lake Tahoe, straddling the California and Nevada line in 1906, was a place where lumber and summer tourism mattered more than mining, even though the Comstock silver boom that had drawn people to the region was long over. Timber cut from the surrounding slopes had fed the mines and mills of Virginia City for decades, and by the early 1900s the shoreline was dotted with logging camps, lake steamers, and a few resort hotels for visitors from Reno and San Francisco. Cave Rock, a dark volcanic headland on the eastern shore, was a landmark for boatmen and travelers, and the lake was known to residents as a cool retreat from the summer heat of the valleys. The year also brought the San Francisco earthquake and fire in April, which turned attention across the state and rattled the wider region's sense of its own safety.
