The Hayden Survey of 1871 was a federally funded expedition that carried photographers, artists and scientists into the Yellowstone region, and this view comes from that effort. Ferdinand V. Hayden led the survey, and the photographers William Henry Jackson and Thomas Moran were part of the team whose work helped shape public understanding of the area. Their images and paintings reached Congress and the wider public just as lawmakers weighed whether to set the land aside, and that debate led to Yellowstone's designation as the first national park in 1872. The wet-plate photographs of the period required heavy equipment and long exposures, so each view represents considerable effort in hauling gear across rough terrain.
