Castle Geyser takes its name from the tall, weathered mound of silica deposits that rises around its vent, a feature that makes it stand out even in the Upper Geyser Basin, the densest cluster of geysers in Yellowstone. The park had been established only about two years earlier, in 1872, and this chromolithograph was issued around 1874 in Prang's American Chromos series, a Boston firm's effort to bring color views of the American landscape into homes. Its bright palette was meant to convey the strangeness of the thermal features to viewers who would never travel west to see them.
