Visitors gathered at the Upper Geyser Basin, the cluster of geysers in Yellowstone that includes Old Faithful. Yellowstone became the nation's first national park in 1872, and by the 1900s, rail service to its gateways and park hotels had made the basin a standard stop for tourists. The catalog dates this view to about 1908 and tentatively credits it to Harry Shipler, though that attribution is uncertain. The record's mention of tourists suggests how the thermal features had become a destination in their own right.
