Castle Geyser takes its name from the weathered, turret-like cone of silica deposits it has built up over time, and it stands in the Upper Geyser Basin, the same basin that holds Old Faithful. This chromolithograph, dated to about 1874 and issued in the Prang's American Chromos series, renders the rugged formation in layers of color. Boston publisher Louis Prang was known for making color printing affordable to a broad American audience. Yellowstone had become the nation's first national park only two years earlier, in 1872, and images like this one helped introduce its wonders to people who would never see them firsthand.
