Summit Basin is one of the upper terrace pools at Mammoth Hot Spring, the limestone formation near the park's north entrance. Hot water rising through the ground dissolves calcium carbonate from the bedrock and deposits it as travertine as the water cools, so the terraces grow and sometimes shift as flow changes. Mammoth lies within Yellowstone, which Congress set aside as the first national park in 1872, and the springs drew early visitors and surveyors long before the park's formal creation. Pictures of these terraces show how quickly the landscape can change, since a pool that is active one decade may dry to white stone later.
