Mammoth Hot Springs, in the northern part of Yellowstone, is known for its stepped travertine terraces, which build up as hot water carrying dissolved limestone cools and leaves mineral deposits behind. Beside them stood the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, which housed visitors touring the park in the early twentieth century. This card, published around 1909 by the International Stereograph Company of Decatur, Illinois, was one of many that let viewers at home see such scenes in three dimensions through a hand viewer. Notice how the hotel looks small against the pale, sculpted slopes rising behind it.
