Mammoth Hot Springs is the one Yellowstone site in this group built from terraces of travertine, the white limestone that hot water deposits as it cools and drips across the hillside. Unlike the geysers elsewhere in the park, these terraces stay in place while their colors shift with the algae and bacteria that thrive in the warm, mineral-rich runoff. The springs sit near Fort Yellowstone, the historic Army post that managed the park in its early decades, so the scene combines natural formation and human history. Carol Highsmith's photograph captures that layered terrain, which has drawn visitors since the park's establishment in 1872.
