Few places in the Yellowstone country look as sculpted as the lower basins at Mammoth Hot Springs, and this view tilts upward so the eye climbs the stepped travertine terraces. It dates to about 1872, the year Congress set aside Yellowstone as the first national park, and it was made for the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, the federal expedition led by Ferdinand V. Hayden. Albumen prints like this one carried images of the region's geology back to officials, scientists and the public in the East. The terraces formed as hot water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate cooled and left mineral deposits behind.
