The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel sits at the north entrance of Yellowstone, in a spot where terraces of mineral deposits spill down the hillside in white, orange and cream tiers. The hotel was built in the early 1880s as part of the Northern Pacific Railroad's push to bring tourists into the park, and it became one of the first lodgings where visitors could rest after the long stagecoach or rail trip. Its wide porches and rustic timber design were typical of the grand park hotels of the era, and the building remains a useful window into how early travelers experienced Yellowstone.
