The tall, bell-shaped travertine cone known as Liberty Cap stands among the terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs, where mineral-rich water has built up limestone deposits for thousands of years. This view, credited to photographer Gifford for the Northern Pacific Railway, was made when the railroad was promoting Yellowstone tourism through the Gardiner Gateway at the park's north entrance. Commercial photographers working for the railroad produced views like this for brochures and postcards, which helped shape how many travelers pictured the park's geysers and formations.
