Mud Volcano, a steaming hollow of bubbling pots in Yellowstone, is the feature here, and its record notes that the Northern Pacific Railway brought visitors to it through the Gardiner Gateway at the park's north entrance. The railroad carried travelers to Gardiner, Montana, where they transferred to stagecoaches and later motor cars for the trip south. Issued under the railway's copyright and held in the National Photo Company collection, the print was part of the promotional imagery that encouraged rail travel to the park in the 1910s.
