The distinguishing feature here is the route named in the title: the hotel was reached by the Northern Pacific Railway through the Gardiner Gateway, the park's north entrance at Gardiner, Montana. The railroad's branch line into that gateway, completed in the early 1900s, brought tourists from the main line at Livingston, Montana, to the edge of the park, and the company built and promoted lodgings along the way to keep those visitors inside its network. The photograph was copyrighted by a photographer named Gifford for the railway company, so it was likely made as promotional material for the line and its hotels. Its date range falls in the years when automobiles were beginning to reach the park, a shift that would soon change how visitors traveled and stayed.
