The Yellowstone River here runs about three miles from the Canyon Hotel, and the caption names the Northern Pacific Railway and the Gardiner Gateway as the way visitors reached this stretch of the park. Northern Pacific brought travelers by rail to Gardiner, Montana, at the park's north entrance, and from there they continued by coach into the interior. The photograph was made for the railroad's promotional campaigns, which pictured the park's scenery to draw tourists west. Its National Photo Company origin and copyright notice reflect that commercial purpose.
