Few views in the park match the drop at the Lower Fall of the Yellowstone River, where the water plunges about 308 feet into the canyon below. Copyrighted by Gifford for the Northern Pacific Railway, the view presents the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone as a destination reached by train through the Gardiner Gateway at the park's north entrance. The Northern Pacific's line to Gardiner, completed in 1903, brought visitors close to the park's geysers and canyons, and railroad promotion like this helped shape how Americans pictured Yellowstone in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, which produced many such views, made them for travelers and tourist markets.
