Tower Falls, where the Yellowstone River drops over a ledge framed by jagged volcanic rock pinnacles, was one of the park's most photographed spots. This view was made under a Northern Pacific Railway copyright, and the railroad promoted the park's northern approach through Gardiner Gateway, the route its passengers used to reach the interior. Commercial views like this one, sold through the railroad and its photographic contractors, helped shape how travelers pictured Yellowstone in the early twentieth century, as a destination reached by rail and by stagecoach and motorcar from the Montana entrance.
