Few maps of Yellowstone were drawn to sell a trip as clearly as this Northern Pacific Railway piece, which presents the park as a destination reached by train. The railroad's Park Branch reached the park's northern gateway at Gardiner, Montana, in 1883, and the company promoted the region under the name "Wonderland." Maps like this one helped travelers picture the park's geysers, lakes and mountains before they arrived. Look at how the rail line is drawn as the main route into the landscape, since that emphasis reveals as much about the company's goals as it does about the park's geography.
