Few maps of the park carry as much promotional weight as this one, issued by the Northern Pacific Railway, which marketed Yellowstone to travelers under the name Wonderland. The railroad's branch line to Gardiner, Montana, opened the park's northern entrance to rail passengers, and its publications did much to shape how the public pictured the place. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park in 1872, so by 1904 its roads and lodging were still developing. The map is worth a close look for how it mixes practical routing with the scenic attractions the company wanted visitors to see.
