Few park maps from this era were made for a railroad's own customers, and this 1910 sheet was issued by the Northern Pacific, which carried many visitors to Yellowstone through its northern gateway at Gardiner, Montana. Yellowstone had been set aside as the nation's first national park in 1872, and by the 1900s rail companies were among its most active promoters, printing maps that highlighted hotels, touring routes and the geysers and falls that drew travelers. Read it as much as an advertisement as a survey, since it presents the park as a destination to be reached and toured.
