Northern Pacific Railway's 1903 map of Yellowstone is a promotional piece, not a survey, and that purpose shapes what it shows. The railroad served the park's northern entrance at Gardiner, Montana, so its map emphasizes routes, hotels and the tourist circuit of geysers and waterfalls rather than the surrounding wilderness. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park in 1872, and railroad companies like this one helped draw travelers west to see it. Worth noticing is how the map presents a vast, rugged park as something reachable by rail and coach.
