A Northern Pacific Railway map from 1903 offers a different view of Yellowstone than the photographs that usually represent it. Railroad companies published maps like this to promote travel, marking the rail lines, hotels, and stagecoach routes that carried tourists to the park from the north and west. Yellowstone had been set aside as the first national park in 1872, and by the early 1900s rail access was what made it reachable for most visitors. Notice how the map treats the park as a destination to be reached by train, not as wilderness in isolation.
