Liberty Cap is a tall, dry cone of travertine standing among the terraces at Mammoth Hot Springs, a mineral deposit built up over time as hot water carried dissolved calcium carbonate to the surface and left it behind layer by layer. Its unusual shape made it one of the most recognizable features of the park's northern section. William Henry Jackson's photographs from the 1871 Hayden Survey had helped persuade Congress to set the region aside as a national park the following year, so pictures like this one added to a public image that was already taking shape.
