A mounted soldier keeps watch over the hot springs and geysers of Midway Geyser Basin, along the Firehole River, in this 1903 view. Before the National Park Service was created in 1916, Army cavalry troops guarded Yellowstone, patrolling against poachers, vandals, and visitors who broke off geyser formations or wandered onto fragile thermal ground. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer, recorded the scene as number 36 in her collection, preserving a reminder of the military's role in protecting the park during its early decades.
