Steam rising from the thermal ground at Norris Geyser Basin marks it as one of the hottest and most chemically active areas in Yellowstone National Park, and the basin is the oldest continuously active thermal area in the park. Its features include Steamboat Geyser, which is the tallest active geyser in the world when it erupts, though its eruptions are irregular and rare. Early visitors reached the basin by stagecoach and wagon road, and the landscape of bare, colorful ground and hissing vents made it one of the park's most memorable stops in the decades after Yellowstone was set aside as a national park in 1872.
