Castle Geyser, in the Upper Geyser Basin, takes its name from the massive, weathered cone of mineral deposit built up around its vent over long years of eruptions. By the early 1900s it was a popular stop on the park's tourist circuit, reached by coach from nearby hotels. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such views for travel promotion, and its photographs helped shape how the public pictured Yellowstone.
