Comet Geyser is one of the lesser-known thermal features in Yellowstone, and this stereoview captures it as 19th-century visitors would have seen it: a cone-shaped eruption venting steam and water above the surrounding terrace. Stereoviews like this one were produced in large numbers and sold to parlors across the country, so they gave people far from the Rocky Mountains a way to "travel" to the park. Yellowstone was set aside as the first national park in 1872, and images of its geysers and hot springs helped build public support for protecting the area. Looking closely, you can see how the stereo pair was designed to be viewed through a special lens to create a sense of depth.
