Mammoth Hot Springs, the terraced limestone formations in the park's northern section, is the subject that sets this stereoview apart from the broader Yellowstone views on the board. Carried by hot water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate, the springs have built up layered white, orange and gold steps over thousands of years, and stereo cards like this one let nineteenth-century viewers see their depth as a three-dimensional scene. Yellowstone had been set aside as the nation's first national park only four years earlier, in 1872, so an 1876 card was part of the early effort to introduce the wonders of the region to a public that had never seen them.
