Old Faithful is the geyser that most visitors to Yellowstone come to see, and its name comes from how regularly it erupts, roughly every hour or so, sending a column of hot water and steam well above the surrounding pine forest. The Norris Geyser Basin is not the setting here; this is the Upper Geyser Basin in the park's southwest corner. The Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition named it in 1870, and the U.S. Congress established Yellowstone as the first national park in 1872, which helped turn spectacles like this into protected public land. Its predictable schedule made it an early favorite of tourists arriving by rail and stagecoach.
