Old Faithful, one of the most visited geysers in Yellowstone, appears here in a hand-colored-looking photochrom print made by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1899. The company's process layered multiple lithographic stones over a black-and-white photograph, producing the soft, saturated colors that made its views popular with tourists and armchair travelers alike. Old Faithful earned its name for the regularity of its eruptions, which typically occur roughly every hour or so, and by the late nineteenth century it had become the centerpiece of the park's visitor experience. Copies like this one were also deposited for U.S. copyright, which helps explain why the image survives in the Library of Congress.
