Old Faithful is the geyser that gave this stretch of Yellowstone one of its best-known landmarks, and this print, dated around 1917, captures it at the moment of eruption. The copyright notation credits Haynes of St. Paul, the studio run by photographer F. Jay Haynes and his family, whose views of the park were sold to tourists and did much to make Yellowstone's scenery familiar across the country. Old Faithful was already a major attraction by the 1910s, drawing visitors who could expect an eruption roughly every hour or so, which made it a dependable subject for commercial photographers.
