Old Faithful, the geyser that gives this print its subject, has erupted at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming with fair regularity for as long as anyone has recorded it, and this c1917 view captures it during the years when Yellowstone was drawing growing numbers of visitors by automobile and rail. The print was made by the Haynes studio of St. Paul, Minnesota, whose photographer F. Jay Haynes held the concession for photographing the park and sold views of its wonders to tourists. Its copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is part of why the picture survives in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs collection, where it documents the geyser as the park's most famous attraction in the early twentieth century.
