Few stereoviews from the early Yellowstone surveys capture water as sharply as this one, which pairs a falling cascade with the dark rock walls that frame it. Stereoviews like this were made to be viewed through a lens viewer, so the two slightly offset images gave the gorge a sense of depth that a flat print could not. Yellowstone became the first national park in 1872, and photographers and stereo publishers moved quickly to sell its scenery to a public that had never seen it. Images of falls and canyons were especially popular, since they showed the park's wonders to armchair travelers across the country.
