Tower Fall, with its tall basalt columns rising above the cascade, is one of the most recognizable early views of Yellowstone. This albumen print from about 1892 was made by the W.H. Jackson Photographic Company, whose studio produced many of the scenic images that helped shape public understanding of the park after its founding in 1872. The falls drop over a sharp lip of volcanic rock, and the striking pillars that give the site its name are worth a close look. Photographs like this one encouraged visitors and lawmakers to see Yellowstone as a place worth protecting.
