Tower Falls, a 132-foot cascade on Tower Creek, is set among tall, eroded rock spires that gave the fall its name. This ca. 1872 print, numbered 234 in its series, comes from the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, the federal survey directed by William Henry Holmes's contemporaries and led by Ferdinand V. Hayden, whose 1871 and 1872 expeditions helped make the case for protecting Yellowstone as the nation's first national park in 1872. Photographs like this one, made by survey photographers such as William Henry Jackson, were circulated to Congress and the public, so the scene carried real weight in the park's creation.
