This map places Yellowstone within northwestern Wyoming Territory, a wider frame than most early views of the park, which shows how the region was understood as a whole. Congress had set the area aside as the first national park in 1872, but in 1885 it was still remote, reached mainly by stagecoach and horseback. A map like this helped travelers, surveyors and investors see where the lakes, geyser basins and mountain passes lay in relation to nearby towns and routes. Its interest lies partly in how recently much of the terrain had been surveyed and filled in.
