This panorama takes in the park as a single sweep, and its title names Wyoming, Montana and Idaho because Yellowstone spans all three states. Congress made it the first national park in the United States in 1872, and in 1915 the U.S. Army still oversaw it, a role it had held since 1886 and would give up to the National Park Service in 1918. Panoramas like this one were often used to convey the park's great scale and its lakes, peaks and geysers to people who would never see them in person.
