Rather than a view of geysers or canyons, this item is a map covering all of Yellowstone National Park and the northwestern corner of Wyoming. Congress had set Yellowstone aside as the first national park in 1872, but much of its interior was still poorly charted in the mid-1880s. The U.S. Geological Survey, created in 1879, worked to fill those gaps, and this sheet offers a useful look at how the park sat within the surrounding mountains, rivers and valleys.
