Few things in this stereograph stand out as much as the road itself: a narrow track cut along the Virginia Canyon wall, with a stagecoach working its way past the falls that the title calls Virginia Falls, now usually known as Virginia Cascade on the Gardner River. By the mid-1900s the park's northern roads were carrying growing numbers of visitors in horse-drawn coaches, and the Ingersoll View Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, sold cards like this one to travelers who wanted to relive the trip at home through a stereoscope. Its pairing of a dramatic road and a falling torrent shows how tourism was reshaping the park's wilder corners.
