The Chittenden Memorial Bridge carries Artists Point Road over the Yellowstone River, a short spur that leads to one of the park's best-known canyon overlooks. The bridge honors Hiram M. Chittenden, an Army engineer whose road-building work in the park in the early 1900s shaped much of the route visitors still use. Its concrete arch reflects the 1930s road-building era, when the National Park Service favored structures that blended with the surrounding landscape. Look at the curve of the arch against the river and the canyon walls beyond it to see how the engineering frames the scenery.
