The spiral bridge on the S Hill stretch of the Cody Road is the detail that sets this view apart. The road carried early automobile and stagecoach traffic into Yellowstone from the east, and its steep grades called for engineering like this curving span to make the climb manageable. The photograph was taken by J.E. Haynes of St. Paul, whose studio documented the park's roads, hotels, and scenery in the early twentieth century. Haynes's work remains one of the main visual records of how visitors first reached the park.
